Nutrition in the early postoperative period

Nutrition in the recovery period depends primarily on the nature of the surgery. Menu after operations on the intestine (for example, after removal of appendicitis) will be very different from the menu, which resolved after treatment of the heart, neck or legs. But in any case, the diet should be sparing, dietary and easily digestible.
If the products are not absorbed or intestines did not earn after the surgery, you should not force the issue. Better to go hungry another day than to face complications and spend the extra days in the hospital.

In the first days after surgery when I discontinued the anesthesia, appetite, most likely, will not. But even if the patient will feel a slight hunger, it is not necessary to offer him food, so he did not have any nausea and vomiting (one of the most common side effects of anesthesia). Can I give him to drink still water or a few SIPS of slightly sweetened tea.

On the second or third day after surgery if doctors see no contraindications, a diet can be gradually expanded. But we should not gang up on food, even if the feeling of hunger delivers serious discomfort. To introduce products slowly to avoid serious complications in the gastrointestinal tract. It is best to limit these days low-fat chicken broth, rice water, yogurt, yogurt and fruit jelly.
The portions of food that you can eat after surgery should be small. Otherwise, you may experience a heaviness in the abdomen, bloating, belching, nausea, and even vomiting. All complications should be reported to your doctor.

In good health, starting from the fourth day can be added to the diet of vegetable and fruit purees (preferably, the last heat treatment), porridge, chopped chicken, without skin and lean fish. From the fifth-sixth day is allowed to eat meat, bread and other diet products that do not cause discomfort in the digestion process.

Proper nutrition after discharge from the hospital

After discharge from the hospital should continue to expand the diet. You can enable in the menu pasta, potatoes, pastries, sweets. However, there are prohibitions: as in the first days after surgery, you cannot drink alcohol and eat spicy, fatty, fried and salty meals. The portion size can be gradually increased, it is important to observe your body and be willing to do a small rollback in the event of abdominal pain or any other negative symptoms from the digestive system.

Do not be afraid to lose the unusual food. It is important that the postoperative period went without complications and all organs and systems managed to recover.
