To register a patent for an invention, make a request, which must contain a statement on granting of a patent. It specify the name of the inventor, place of residence or location.

Describe the invention. Give a full description, based on which the invention is implemented. Make a patent search in handbooks, journals, etc., provide information about the analogues, write the patent number or details of the prototype.

Make the claims. How well you will make it, in the future will depend on the reliability to protect your rights in the invention. The claims, write one sentence consisting of two parts: the preamble and distinctive. In the preamble describe the purpose of the invention. Turn on the characteristics of the closest prior art. A distinctive part of the start by the words "characterized in that". It give the features which distinguish your invention from the prototype. A formula can contain one or several items.

If understanding the nature of your invention, drawings are required, make a brief description.

Next, write the abstract. Recommended volume – up to 1000 characters. Abstract needed for a large range of specialists could understand the invention more quickly. Information should be specific and clear.

Seal the envelope of A4 size and send a registered letter to Rospatent the following documents: application, a description of the invention (3 pieces), abstract (3pcs), drawings (3pcs.), original paid receipt of state duty for filing the application. Make a fourth copy of the documents and assure at the notary to protect from theft.

Within 2 months Rospatent conducts a formal examination: check the contents of the application, availability of documents, proof of payment of duty. Next is the substantive examination which lasts from a year to two years. The results of this examination, the decision on patent grant or to refuse extradition. Further, the invention is made in the State register of inventions of the Russian Federation and is issued a patent for the invention.

The beginning of the term of the patent shall be the date of filing. This is a period of twenty years. Every year pay a patent fee to maintain it.
