The gold standard

In different countries for jewelry use gold alloys of various composition and quality. For example, residents of Japan prefer precious jewelry of pure gold, i.e. gold of the highest standard.

The sample is a determination of the merits of precious metals, which shows the ratio of metal and alloys. The higher the sample "gold", so it is more valuable. There are two main systems of trial: metric and carat.

In the metric system for unit of measures adopted by the gram in the ratio of pure gold to alloys 1 to 1000. In other words, 585-I test shows that 1000 grams of the alloy contains 585 grams of gold, and the rest 415 is a ligature. The metric system is used in Russia and the CIS, in other countries the gold standard is measured in carats. The ratio of gold to alloys is 1/24. Accordingly, the highest sample is of 24 carats.

In the Russian Federation for gold jewelry have the following carat: 375, 500, 585, 750, 958, 999. To facilitate the international gold trading, there is a ratio of samples metric and Karat systems. Thus, the alloy with a share of pure 99.9% gold has a fineness of 999, which corresponds to 24 carats. 958 fineness is 23 carats (23/24 =0,958), etc.

583 and 585 - difference between samples

Since 1927, in Russia a system of probing changed to the metric system. In accordance with the new standard was introduced the following vehicles: 375, 500, 583, 750, 958.

Gold 583, corresponding to 14 carats, was widespread in the Soviet Union, but in many countries, this trial was considered a lower quality 14-carat gold, which greatly reduces Russian gold in the international market. That is why the government has decided to increase the sample up to 585. Officially 585-I test was recognized in 1994. In fact, the 583-I breakdown is obsolete, and differs from the 585 th only difference in the sample size.

There is a perception that there is a direct correlation between the color and the size of the sample. It is not so. In addition to high quality gold, which is pure metal with a negligible amount of natural impurities, other alloys of the precious metal contain a certain mass ligature. The intensity of the color, the shade depends on what metals are used for obtaining a gold alloy, i.e., gold products one sample can have many colors and shades. For example, gold 585-th sample can be white, yellow, green, red, with an equal content of the alloys. By the way, gold 583-th sample it was decided to add more copper so jewelry from the gold was red hue.
