1
The epithets include the figurative definition that set essential feature in the depicted phenomenon (gray fog, boundless sky). A metaphor is a word or expression used in a figurative sense on the basis of similarities of objects or phenomena in the chosen basis (an avalanche of stars, a wall of fire).
2
To distinguish between the epithet and the metaphor can be ways of expressing different parts of speech. Epithets can be expressed as:

- adjectives (sad land);
- nouns as applications (sorceress-winter);
- adverbs, speakers shaped definitions of action (silently frozen pine);
- gerunds that are close in meaning to the figurative definitions of the action (rolling waves, thundering and flashing).

Object, action or phenomenon, to which the given definition is always specified in the offer.

Metaphor is most often expressed by nouns or common structures, including different parts of speech (Fragrant rain of petals of cherry little splatters). Usually a metaphor is a more detailed design than epithets.
3
Depending on the expression of the author's evaluation of all the epithets are divided into fine, highlighting an essential feature of the depicted objects (dead land), and expressive, giving the author's evaluation of the subject matter (crazy crowd). The basis for the metaphor is supposed similarity in shape, color, size, senses, etc. Therefore, metaphors are means of expression of the author's characteristics of the subject (pearl of poetry, fire of love).
4
A feature of the epithet is his "ability" to absorb the properties of many tropes, including metaphors. In this case, determine the metaphorical epithet (Golden autumn, red sun). Also the epithet may be included in an expanded metaphor. ("Swamps and marshes. Blue boards heaven." S. Esenin)
