The volume of feeding in the first ten days of life

During the first attachment of the baby to the breast in the hospital he will get quite a bit – just a few precious drops of colostrum. This is due to the fact that the child is not able to suckle, he gets tired quickly, additionally, the colostrum is very concentrated. It is enough to meet the needs of a newborn in nutrients. The volume of his stomach is only 7 ml.
Next, the child begins to attach to the breast more often and longer. An increase in the amount eaten milk (colostrum to transitional milk and then Mature milk) pretty fast.

During the first day the baby will drink only 10 ml of colostrum per attachment. On the second day, the daily volume of colostrum will increase to 90 ml (10 – 30 ml per serving). On the third day comes the milk, the baby can now eat up to 190 ml of milk per day (30 ml per feeding). On the fourth day the total amount eaten milk will increase to 300 ml (40 ml per feeding). On the fifth day a newborn will eat 350 ml milk 50 ml at a time).

On the sixth day, the baby will cope with 400 ml of mother's milk or a mixture (60 ml per serving). On the seventh day, the volume of each feeding will be 70 ml, and the eighth – 80 ml. On the ninth and tenth day the child will suck 80-90 ml of breast milk or formula from a bottle.

To one month, the volume of the stomach of the infant will increase up to 100 ml.

How to calculate feeding levels for baby up to 10 days

All calculations to determine the amount of the required amount of nutrition the baby can be divided into two: the calculation for the first ten days of life (newborn baby), and a second calculation for a child of ten days of life up to one year.

The formula for determining the amount of child nutrition in the first 10 days of his life:
N (the number of days of life) x 10 = one-time amount of supply of the child.

Daily volume of food in the first 10 days of life:
If the child was born weighing 3200 g, the formula is: age in days (N), x 70.
Example: the baby is 5 days old with a weight of 2800 grams should get per day: 5 x 70 = 350 ml of milk.

If the child was born with a mass of 3200 g, then the formula is: age in days (N) x 80.
Example: the baby is 5 days old with a weight of 3800 g should get per day: 5 x 80 = 400 ml of milk.

How to calculate feeding levels for a child from 10 days to 1 year

The formula for determining the daily food intake of the child from the first 10 days of life to 1 year:
From 10 days to 6 weeks – 1/5 of body weight;
From 6 weeks to 4 months – 1/6 of body weight;
From 4 months to 6 months – 1/7 of body weight;
From 6 months to 8 months – 1/8 of body weight;
From 8 months to 12 months – 1/9 of body weight.

Example: child 1 month (4 weeks), weight 4000 gr. Calculation of daily volume of milk for him is: 4000/5 = 800 ml.
Remember that up to one year of a child's daily food intake should not exceed 1200 ml per day.

How to determine if the child receives milk

Breastfeeding is considered the normal weekly gain in weight 150 – 200 grams, if less than 100 grams, you should worry and take action. Infants eat up to 12 times a day to control the volume of milk eaten in one go, use baby weights: weigh in the same clothes along with a diaper before and after a single feeding. The difference record, show at the reception pediatrician.

There's still a way of monitoring urination: wet diapers after the first three days of life must be at least 5-6 pieces a day. Watch the behavior of the baby if he is restless, sleeps badly, cries a lot and her mouth looking for the breast – concludes that the child is malnourished. Full and happy the child will be cheerful, happy, good and long sleep, to have no concern for no apparent reason.
