The word "marginal" has come to Russian language from German, to and from French, and in French, in turn from Latin. From Latin, this word can be translated as "on the edge". The word "lumpen" borrowed again from the German, and in translation it means "rags". Lumpen called people in the lowest social strata and not engaged in any socially useful work. This means that you cannot call a poor person who is working hard to earn, but achieves only modest results.
