Instruction
1
To calculate the information volume of text from which the book consists, determine the initial data. You must know the number of pages in the book, the average number of lines of text on each page and the number of characters including spaces in each line of text. Let the book contains 150 pages, 40 lines per page, 60 characters per line.
2
Find the number of characters in the book: multiply data of the first step. 150 pages * 40 lines * 60 characters = 360 million characters in the book.
3
Identify the information volume of the book, based on the fact that one character weighs one byte. 360 characters * 1 byte = 360 thousand bytes.
4
Go to a larger unit of measurement: 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1024 bytes 1 MB (megabyte) = 1024 KB. Then 360 thousand bytes / 1024 = 351,56 351,56 KB or KB / 1024 = 0,34 MB.
5
To find the amount of information of the graphic file, also specify the initial data. Let the image of 10x10 cm obtained by using the scanner. Need to know the resolution of the device — for example, 600 dpi and color depth. The last value, for example, it is possible to take 32 bit.
6
Express resolution of the scanner in dots per cm 600 dpi = 600 dpi. 1 inch = 2.54 cm Then 600 / 2,54 = 236 points.
7
Find the size of the image in pixels. 10 cm = 10 * 236 dots per cm = 2360 points. Then image size = 10x10 cm = 2360x2360 points.
8
Calculate the total number of points that make up the image. 2360 * 2360 = 5569600 pieces.
9
Calculate the amount of information of the obtained image file. To do this, multiply the depth of color on the result of the eighth step. 32 bits * 5569600 items = 178227200 bit.
10
Go to larger units: 1 byte = 8 bits 1 KB (kilobyte) = 1024 bytes, etc. 178227200 bits / 8 = bytes 22278400, or 22278400 bytes / 1024 = KB 21756, 21756, or KB / 1024 = MB 21. Because of rounding, the results are approximate.
