In the first place to determine the kind of noun you need to put it in the nominative singular. Typical generic ending for the male of the genus is zero ends (plant, horse, table), for the female of the genus a/I (car, paint, earth), for the middle sort - o/e (field, cloud, mirror).
2
There are nouns that have no singular forms (pants, glasses, watches, scissors, scales etc.). Such nouns cannot be attributed to any of the three genera. Most of these nouns denote objects consisting of two parts (trousers, scissors), so this kind is called a pair.
3
Among the many nouns should pay attention to the group of words denoting some shoes and a pair of objects. The singular of such words should be remembered. For example, the shoes - one Shoe, shoes - one Shoe, shale - slate one, the shoes one Shoe, sandals, one sandal, sneaker is one sneaker. And also: leggings - one gamasa, leggings, one legging left. BUT the Golf one Golf, rails - single rail.
