To some extent this stereotype untrue. And Professor, and academician – scientific title, the path is long and difficult, and therefore reach such a position, as a rule, in old age. But a Professor can be in any University or research Institute, and an academician in the Academy of Sciences.

Professor

Professor – and academic title, and position, the path which lies on a specific "career ladder". The title is inseparable from a person to the position appointed. PhD may take the position of assistant Professor, but may remain as an assistant, or become so, if you go to another University. After a few years, he will receive the title of associate Professor, and then he will be able to apply for the associate Professor post in any University.

The next stage career – as Professor of the Department. There is no direct ban on the appointment of candidates for the position, but usually it is a doctorate. In the same way as in the case of associate Professor, a few years in this position, the scientist can obtain the rank of Professor and is a mandatory doctorate. Professorship gives the right to head the Department.

Academician

Before the October revolution of 1917, an academician in Russia called any student in academic institutions like University. In the Soviet era this title was introduced officially in another sense, in which it is now used in the Russian Federation.

An academician called member of the Academy of Sciences, an organization uniting scientists and organizes the activities of the scientific community. Do not confuse this Academy with the higher education institution bearing a similar name – for example, the Russian Academy of music Gnesin names.

Theoretically, in order to become an academician, a Professor can not be sure, but in fact this honor is most often awarded to scientists who already have professorial rank.

The first step to the title of academician – the election of a corresponding member. For outstanding scientific successes of the scientist was elected a corresponding member, by secret ballot, which takes place in the corresponding branch of the Academy, and then a General meeting of the Academy of Sciences approves his election. From among the corresponding members elected academicians at the General meeting of the Academy of Sciences and the title of it is assigned for life.

Currently there are many organizations that call themselves academies. Some of them – for example, the international Academy of energy information Sciences – are irrelevant to this science. Their members also call themselves "academics", but they don't have any rights.

To wear the title of academician can only members of the state academies. Those in Russia six Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Russian Academy of medical Sciences (RAMN), Russian Academy of education (RAO), Russian Academy of fine arts, Russian Academy of architecture and construction Sciences (RAASN) and the Russian Academy of agricultural Sciences (RAAS).
