Leo Tolstoy took the sacrament of Holy baptism, and belonged to the Orthodox Church. However, after time the writer in some of his works puts thoughts that are contrary to the Christian Orthodox tradition. Thus, in the work "Resurrection" Tolstoy explicitly showed its unwillingness to accept the basic doctrinal truths of Christianity.
Tolstoy rejected the main teaching of Orthodoxy on the Trinity of God. Tolstoy did not recognize the faith in the Holy Trinity. In addition, he believed the impossible immaculate conception of the virgin Mary that resulted in the derogatory image of the blessed virgin. The dogma of the divine nature of Christ are not accepted by the author, and the event of Christ's Resurrection in the eyes of the writer were mere myth.
Leo is not just adhered to such views, he announced his doctrine to the people. Therefore, at the end of the XIX century, there is a particular heretical in the direction of Christianity - "tolstoyism."
Tolstoy dared to write his view of sacred history of the New Testament. The result was the writing of the author of his gospel. In addition, Tolstoy has created a serious work on the study of the New Testament volume of about 800 pages, in which sharp key has spoken out against the fundamental truths of Christianity, sometimes I used the words abuse and otherwise compromised the modern clergy.
Such activities count Leo Tolstoy simply could not attract the attention of the Church. The result of anti-Christian writings of the writer was the excommunication of the author in 1901. Tolstoy was offered the opportunity of repentance, but the writer never renounced his religious views. Therefore, until this time Leo Tolstoy is considered excommunicated from the Orthodox Church.
