Purchase a special adapter (adapter) that allows you to transmit information with a conventional hard drive via a USB connection. Modern adapters support both the transition from SATA to USB and IDE to USB, they can have a small network adapters for additional power the hard drive, and support hard disks of forms-factors 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch.

Once you have selected the desired adapter, connect it to the hard drive, using the necessary connector. Accordingly, for IDE the connector, and SATA is a small connector.

The USB connector coming from the adapter connect to the USB controller of the laptop. The Winchester will work as a normal USB drive. If your adapter has a led indication, ensure that it delivers positive signals.

If you have the Winchester with interface SATA, and the adapter provides power only for the drives with interface IDE (four thick pins), get an special adapter with power supply for IDE power to SATA, but in any case, not Vice versa (it happens that in the configuration may be missing the adapter). Make sure the power connector to IDE adapter is a plug, not a socket.

Do not worry about what operating system is installed on your laptop, modern adapters work with all systems from Win98 up to Vista and Mac.
