What is varicocele

Sobe varicocele is a varicose vein of the testicle and spermatic cord. For the first time this disease was described in the I century of our era, but to prove the connection between it and the functional impairment of the testis was only in the 19th century. The most serious complication of varicocele is infertility in addition, 40-80% of men with this disease are diagnosed with reduced fertility. As for age categories, the incidence here is very varied – at preschool age varicocele can detect not more than 0.12%, whereas between 15 and 30 years old, this figure rises to 3-30%.

Varicocele is diagnosed most often in athletes and people engaged in heavy physical labor.

Many people mistakenly tie the presence of varicocele to lifting weights and other physical overloads. However, when the tension of the abdominal muscles, the disease does not appear, but rather, is rapidly progressing. Thus, physical activity is a possible factor for the development of existing varicocele. The true cause of the disease is a malfunction of the venous valves that prevent backflow of blood from the veins. During physical exertion, the pressure increases in the veins and blood flowing in the opposite direction, expanding wall of a venous vessel. In addition, the cause of varicocele can be compression of the upper mesenteric artery renal vein.

Sports and varicocele

Given the rapid progression of varicocele during physical exertion, it is impossible to give a definite answer to the question, "can I do sports with this disease?". Exercising is not contraindicated when varicocele; however, they should be strictly limited to time and intensity of physical activity. Especially not recommended to overload the abdominal muscles.

If it was carried out surgical treatment of varicocele, the sport is strictly forbidden for a period of 2 to 4 weeks.

To avoid the development of varicocele, you should take preventive measures to eliminate congestion in the pelvic area. These include a normalization of stool (at constant constipation), the exception of prolonged physical stress, practice regular sex life, walks, adequate sleep and activities including gentle sports like swimming and athletics.
