Look in the user manual or the service book of your car. Find out before selecting engine oil the engine type, its degree of wear and operating conditions of the vehicle. The data you will be able to understand which oil you should choose. Choose the product which meets specifications of the manufacturer of your car.

Learn to read the markings on the label of the cans to be able to choose the right oil. For example, if you select engine oil for the winter please note the letter W on the canister and the number that precedes it (for example, 20W, 5W, 0W) — it means winter oil. The number of (winter index) refers to what the lowest temperature recommended oil.

To get the minimum recommended temperature, subtract 35. If the canister is the combination of number+W+number (for example, SAE 10W40), it is a multigrade oil. To obtain the lower limit of the temperature, subtract 10 (winter index) of 35.

Depending on the type of engine oil for choose petrol or diesel engine according to API classification. If the card contains the letter S, the oil for the gasoline engine if its not going for diesel. Note also the second letter after the S or C — the further the second letter from the beginning of the alphabet the better the oil. If the card contains both markers (e.g., SM/CI-4), the oil is versatile, and you can use it in a diesel engine, and gasoline.

To choose oil appropriate to the type of your vehicle, note the marking on the classification of ACEA. Inspect the label for the presence of the letters A, b or E. the Letter a describes oil, suitable for petrol engines, minibuses, cars and vans. For diesel van, minibus or car choose oil marked V. In the case that you need to fill the winter the oil in a heavy truck, select the canister, marked with the letter E.
