"Big law dictionary" gives a definition of law as "social science and profession, studying law as a special system of social norms, and also legal forms of organization and activities of States, the political system of society". Another definition of law is: "theoretical form and a way of organizing legal knowledge." With such knowledge, lawyers are called upon to ensure law and order and to monitor the implementation of legal norms in all spheres of public life.

Studying at a higher education institution in the appropriate direction, future lawyer possesses fundamental and specialized knowledge in the field of jurisprudence. In some Universities discipline specialty starts from the first training, others with the second or third. Vary the timing of training in this area. Universities offer two programs in the specialty "Jurisprudence": the first is the training of lawyers within five years and receive a diploma of a specialist in accordance with the second six years, taking into account the requirements of the Bologna Declaration – bachelor (4 years) and master (2 years). Some law schools combine both of these programs give applicants a choice.

Law as a profession, has in its structure several specializations. They differ from each other by a set of disciplines that have an impact on the choice of profession in future activities. The main specializations of law are:
- state legal;
- civil law;
international law;
- criminal law.

In law, a separate, specifically-taken specialization, the following disciplines: law, international security, contemporary issues of international law, current problems of international law, international human rights law, etc.
