The determination of the height of a standard high-rise buildings
Count the number of floors in the building. Multiply the resulting number by 2.9 m and add to the product of 1.5 and 2 m. the Obtained value is approximately equal to the height of the building. The figures show:
• 2.9 m – average height of a floor;
• 1.5 m – the height of the basement;
• 2 m – the height of the attic.
2
Determination of the height of the building with its shadow
On a Sunny day, select two control points: the top (at the top of the buildingand the bottom on the ground at the base of the building). The bottom point should be on one vertical line with the upper. The easiest way for control points to make the top and bottom of the corner of the house, if he appears in the shadows.
Look at the shadow of the houses of the upper control point. Measure the distance from it to the lower control point of the building. Denote this value by the letter M.
Stick in the ground in any sunlit place the pole length 1.5-2 m. Measure the length of its shadow. Indicate the length of the pole and the length of its shadow as h and m respectively.
Define the height of the building according to the formula H=(h*M)/m in meters.
The formula is based on the similarity of triangles, one of which is formed by two control points of the building and shade the upper control point and the other pole and its shadow.
3
Determination of the height of the building with a cardboard triangle
Cut out of cardboard or fiberboard right triangle with equal sides (half a square). Side can be anything, for example, 0.5 m.
Looking at the upper control point of the building using the hypotenuse of the triangle (your eye, the hypotenuse of the triangle and the upper reference point are on the same line) – to retreat from the building as long as the leg of the triangle (farthest from you) will not occupy a vertical position. Mark this place with some object-like a stone.
Measure the distance from the point to the bottom control point of the building. Add to this value the distance from your eye (corner of the triangle) to the ground. The resulting value is equal to the height of the building.
For convenience of measurements it is desirable to have an assistant who will control the perpendicular sides of the triangle with a plumb line. You can also triangle nailed to a pole so that his leg was parallel to the pole. To maintain the vertical position of the pole rested in the ground, much easier than trying to control the position of the triangle.
As in the previous case, this method is based on the similarity of triangles, cardboard and formed by connecting three points – your eyes, top and bottom control points of the building.
